In 1899, Hugh Hughes started the Hughes Funeral Home in Plains Twp. Hugh and his wife Edith Merritt Hughes owned and operated the funeral home.

Unfortunately in 1933, Hugh Hughes, at 54,  passed away leaving his wife Edith, a licensed funeral director, to run the funeral home.

Later in 1938, his son Hugh Merritt Hughes became a licensed funeral director and along with his mother now owned and operated the funeral home.

In 1950, they made the move to Wilkes-Barre purchasing the Woody Doran Funeral Home at the current location, 451 North Main Street Wilkes-Barre.  Extensive renovations were made and the funeral home thrived.

H. Merritt Hughes, Sr., and his wife Alva Kashmere Hughes, operated the funeral home.  In 1968, H. Merritt Hughes, Sr, 51, passed away leaving his wife, Alva, a registered nurse and licensed funeral director, and son, H. Merritt Hughes, Jr.  to run the funeral home.

In 1976, they purchased the Strubeck Funeral Home in West Pittston.

In 2000, the fourth generation of funeral directors entered the family business, Daniel J. Hughes.

In 2012, Daniel purchased another location in South Wilkes-Barre.  After a careful consideration and growth in South Wilkes-Barre, in 2015, the West Pittston location was sold. Now, after the death of H. Merritt Hughes, Jr., in April 2020, his son Daniel J. Hughes and wife Audra and their two boys continue the long tradition of providing funeral services to the families of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Daniel is a lifelong resident of Wilkes-Barre.  He is a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, and the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service, Inc., New York City.

A fourth generation funeral director, Daniel has been a licensed funeral director for many years and had served as a deputy coroner and later appointed coroner for Luzerne County.

Daniel, as was his family before him, is a community minded person and has been involved in many civic, fraternal, and community organizations.  He, along with his wife and children, reside in South Wilkes-Barre.

Having performed numerous traditional contemporary funeral and cremation services, Daniel and his family would be honored to have the privilege of serving your family's funeral and cremation needs.
